Feltis, Spectacled Bear Conservation
There’s no cuter holiday gift than Spectacled Bear Conservation’s (SBC) handcrafted woolen animal, or “felti” from Peru. SBC works with remote communities in northwestern Peru to provide training and equipment to produce the feltis. The money from sales goes back into these communities providing a much-needed boost to their economy to help women and children. Living alongside elephants is no easy feat. Save the Elephants (STE) seeks to reduce the damage caused to communities by crop-raiding elephants through their Elephants and Bees Project. This project uses beehive fences to protect crops since bees act as a natural deterrent for elephants and the honey provides alternative incomes for families. This saiga toy was so popular at our Wildlife Conservation Expo in October that Saiga Conservation Alliance (SCA) brought them back for the holidays. These toys are handmade by a craftswoman who lives in the community adjacent to Russia’s Stepnoy Reserve, where saiga antelope live year-round. Sales support SCA’s work to secure a future for saigas.
