Is impeachment causing the Dem party to crack up along racial lines?
On Joy Reid’s MSNBC show this morning, regular guest Elie Mystal blamed “white people in the middle” for the failure of the Dem congressional leadership to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump.
Mystal disparagingly stereotyped the white Dem voters he had in mind as “three truck drivers . . . in a diner.” In contrast, claimed Mystal, “the black and brown community is overwhelmingly in favor of impeachment.” Concluded Mystal: “Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats at some point have to acknowledge their base.”
Can you imagine if someone blamed and stereotyped black voters in the same disdainful manner that Mystal did regarding those hypothetical “truck drivers in a diner?” The roof would blow off!
If Pelosi were to take Mystal’s advice, the biggest beneficiaries would likely be . . . Republicans. Hillary lost in 2016 precisely because she wrote off “white people in the middle,” and focused on the Dem base. So go ahead, Nancy Pelosi: make our day. Ignore those truck drivers in the diner and focus on your base!
Note: Mystal described those three white truck drivers as having been interviewed in a diner by Jacob Soboroff. That is presumably a facetious reference to the fact that NBC/MSNBC correspondent Soboroff is known for his man-in-the-street [or diner] interviews.
Here’s the transcript.

ELIE MYSTAL: The last thing I want to say is this. Like, when we talk about the polls, I think it’s important for people to understand that the black community, the black and brown community is overwhelmingly in favor of impeachment. The Democratic base is overwhelmingly in favor of impeachment. The people who aren’t are kind of white people in the middle. Right? It’s three truck drivers that Jacob Soboroff interviewed at a diner: those are the people who are not sure about impeachment. So, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats have to at some point acknowledge their base.
